Diesel price hike to boost alt fuel adoption a 'non-starter'
Generous incentives have long been used to motivate fleets to adopt alternative fuels and powertrains to reduce emissions. But might disincentives, like a higher diesel tax, help boost alt fuel sales even more?

Westport’s High Pressure Direct Injection display at ACT Expo earlier this month attracted plenty of attention. Westport, which advertises the system for natural gas and hydrogen engines, states on its website that “HPDI with 40% biomethane delivers the same life cycle CO2 reductions as fuel cells using blue/green hydrogen blends, and can deliver zero [well-to-wheels] CO2 with pure biomethane.”

Carbon negative bio-LNG could gain traction in the U.S.
Cummins, Hexagon Agility and Natural Gas Vehicles for America weigh in on bio liquified natural gas which for now has been mostly at work in European trucks.

Internal combustion still got game. Hexagon Agility displayed UPS' Mack truck which runs on renewable natural gas at ACT Expo earlier this month. The annual week-long event features mostly all-electric commercial vehicles followed by hydrogen fuel cell. Internal combustion (IC) examples like the one above are few and far between though experts, including those at Cummins, see clean-running IC powertrains playing a critical role on the long path to zero emissions. Bio liquified natural gas (LNG) may get some additional use in the U.S. as fleets push to cut emissions but it's expected to be an uphill climb given a lack of infrastructure. Hexagon reports that it's bio LNG Cryoshelter shown on the left sparked interest in both U.S. and European fleets.
