Swift Transportation Co. President Robert W. Cunningham has added chief executive to his job responsibilities, the trucking company announced Friday, Oct. 28.

Swift founder Jerry Moyes, who served as chairman and CEO since he began the company in 1966, previously announced plans to step down from both positions, and has moved up the timeline by two months. Moyes will continue as a director of the company. Jock Patton, a director of the company since March 2004 and currently its lead director, has been elected chairman of the board.

Cunningham has worked in the transportation industry since 1973 and served as executive vice president of sales and marketing for Phoenix-based Swift from 1985 to 1997. He subsequently owned and operated one of the nation’s most successful commercial truck dealerships, and rejoined Swift as president and chief operating officer in November 2004.
