Bill offers tax breaks for truck safety devices

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and several co-sponsors introduced legislation (H.R.3820) on Wednesday, Oct. 10, that would provide a tax credit to purchasers of commercial motor vehicles equipped with certain advanced safety technologies, such as collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems, vehicle stability systems and brake stroke monitoring systems. The bill was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxes.

The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, which represents automotive and heavy-duty truck product manufacturers, praised the bill’s introduction. “We believe that tax credits will accelerate the availability of important safety-enhancing technologies to heavy vehicle operators and fleets,” said Ann Wilson, MEMA’s vice president of government affairs.
