The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, has released the 2008 edition of the National Transportation Atlas Databases. This year’s NTAD consists of 27 datasets, seven of which were updated for the 2008 release.

The 2008 edition features updated datasets from last year’s NTAD and premieres five new databases for Alternative Fuel locations, National Bridge Inventory, Railroad Grade Crossings, Census Core Business Statistical Areas (replaces the Census’s Metropolitan Statistical Areas) and the Freight Analysis Framework. Also, substantial revisions were made to the National Parks, Waterways and Metropolitan Planning Organization Boundaries. NTAD 2008 also includes intermodal terminals, the National Rail Network, Non-Attainment Areas and transit rail lines and stations, among other data layers.

NTAD 2008 is provided in shapefile format, which is compatible with most Geographical Information Systems software. For technical information and copies, call Mark Bradford at 202-366-6810.
