SkyBitz, a provider of remote asset management solutions and information data services, announced the appointment of Ray Kuntz, former American Trucking Associations chairman and current chief executive officer of Watkins & Shepherd Trucking, to the SkyBitz board of directors.

“Proper utilization of trailers has always been a key factor in trucking profitability, but the current soft economy has made it an even larger factor,” Kuntz says. “Carriers must do more with less, and SkyBitz solutions result in operating cost reductions of a trailer fleet by better utilizing what is already owned. The economy also leads us to expect an increase in cargo theft. SkyBitz solutions allow for cost-effective ways to prevent cargo theft and recover it when it happens. I am excited to work with a company that is developing innovative solutions that create so much value for our industry.”

Kuntz brings 23 years of experience in the trucking industry to the SkyBitz board. The company says his appointment further strengthens its position in its largest and most mature vertical — the trucking industry. Kuntz, who served as ATA chairman from June 2007 through October 2008, provides direction for the daily operation of Helena, Mont.-based Watkins & Shepherd, which runs about 700 trucks and 1,400 trailers with operations in 16 states. He is also the current chairman of the American Trucking and Transportation Insurance Co., a risk retention group that provides trucking liability insurance.

“SkyBitz and our customers will reap the benefit of Ray Kuntz’s longtime experience as a trucking industry leader and SkyBitz solution user,” says Homaira Akbari, president and CEO of Sterling, Va.-based SkyBitz. “Ray’s decision to join our board reflects the type of commitment we are seeing from the industry for our technology and for our long-term company strategy.”
