Work officially can begin on a street improvement project to revitalize Dubuque’s Historic Millwork District thanks to a signed agreement between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the City of Dubuque for $5.6 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars.
The $5.6 million project will help jumpstart economic development in the underutilized Historic Millwork District, creating streets that are more accessible and safer for a broad range of users, including drivers, public transit riders, pedestrians, bicyclists, children and people with disabilities.
“Recovery Act dollars are helping to give the people in Dubuque a new place to live and work,” says U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Here in Dubuque, as in so many cities and communities across the country, the Recovery Act is helping to strengthen our infrastructure and create well-paying jobs.”
“This project is the start of a new chapter for residents of Dubuque that will help create a sustainable, urban neighborhood in which to live and work,” says Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez.
The $5.6 million was awarded under the Recovery Act’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program. Tiger funding is designed to promote innovative, multimodal and multijurisdictional transportation projects that provide significant economic and environmental benefits to an entire metropolitan area, region or the nation.
