Dana Holding Corp. has announced more upgrades to its Spicer Life Series heavy-duty universal joints product line. Dana introduced enhancements to its SPL-250 models in August and has followed that with recent improvements to the SPL-170 model.

The new SPL-170 universal joint now features a bearing package that includes larger needle bearings, a special Viton synthetic seal and a thermoplastic seal guard. Dana says the new improvements are designed to increase capacity, exclude contaminants and improve grease retention and serviceability. Dana says the SPL-170 also now features a new premium synthetic lubricant to improve bearing life.

“All Spicer SPL driveshaft assemblies for heavy-duty applications now include these important product improvements,” says Tom DeHaven, Dana senior manager of Driveshaft Products. “We strive to continuously deliver value and innovation to all of our end-user and original-equipment manufacturers (OEM) customers.”

The SPL-170 now has a torque capacity rating of 12,550 pounds and is designed for Class 8 main- and tandem-drive interaxle driveshaft applications. Dana says the SPL-170 improves dynamic bearing capacity by up to 20 percent, while the SPL-250 improves capacity by up to 40 percent. Warranty coverage is available for up to three years or 350,000 miles.
