Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems recently was recognized as a Champion of Corporate Wellness for its Health Cares Heroes program, which recognizes individuals and businesses that play a vital role in the quality of everyday life and the economic future of Northeastern Ohio. The Bendix Employee Wellness Program was chosen as a winner because of the company’s commitment to creating a healthy work environment.

“We are honored that our efforts to create a culture of healthy living and healthy lifestyles for our employees and their family members have been recognized,” says Diane Shields, vice president of human resources at Bendix. “Our employee wellness program is an integral part of our how we measure our success as a company. By giving our employees the tools they need to live a healthier life, we are creating a more productive and safe working environment.”

In the late 1990s, Bendix began researching how to create a healthier working environment that would lower absenteeism, while making employees more productive and healthy both in and out of the workplace. The result was the Bendix Employee Wellness program that currently consists of five categories: weight management, physical activity, tobacco cessation, stress management and prevention/early detection.

As part of this program, yearly physicals and blood screenings are available to employees and family members free of charge. In addition, employees are given an annual personal health assessment – along with free access to resources and counselors through their insurance carrier – to help each individual develop a personal health plan.

The program also includes an onsite fitness center, an educational series, the Bendix Family Connection Website, healthy vending machine options, a commitment to provide healthy catering and an indoor employee walking path. Bendix also offers employees tobacco cessation programs free of charge and discounts on insurance for tobacco-free employees and dependents.
