PeopleNet, a provider of integrated onboard computing and mobile communications systems, announced that it has expanded options for customers to enhance driver safety by adding another partner to power its In-Cab Navigation application. ALK Technologies, a provider of GeoLogistics and navigation software, offers CoPilot Truck designed to help drivers calculate routes and get back on route in the quickest, easiest and safest way.

“Safety is the holy grail for today’s trucking firm, so trucking companies are looking for ways to reduce the root causes of accidents, with the number one cause being distraction,” says Rick Ochsendorf, PeopleNet senior vice president of product management and operations. “One of the most effective ways to eliminate distraction is to provide spoken turn-by-turn directions, ensuring that drivers focus on the road. Plus, routing efficiency results in reduced mileage, time and fuel costs – a winning combination.”

In-Cab Navigation powered by ALK’s CoPilot Truck is designed to provide an easy-to-use intuitive interface with spoken turn-by-turn directions and easy-to-follow no-distracting guidance displays. PeopleNet will launch the latest release – Version 9 – of CoPilot Truck, which calculates efficient routes based on vehicle profile information, routing parameters such as truck-restricted and prohibited roads and load type, including hazardous materials. A motion-triggered safety lock is designed to help drivers stay focused on driving.

“We are pleased to extend our relationship with PeopleNet by providing our onboard truck-specific in-cab navigation software,” says Michael Kornhauser, ALK’s senior vice president of enterprise solutions. PeopleNet’s Automated Workflow is the perfect foundation for CoPilot Truck, ensuring that accurate destinations are in the system for safe routing. Drivers can update vehicle/trailer dimensions and cargo-based restrictions for maintaining accurate route profiles.”

Onboard route calculation to 7 million points of interest (POIs) or integrated dispatched stops helps drivers stay on the road and in motion. Drivers can identify destinations and calculate routes, searching POIs by name or category, including truck-specific categories such as truckstops and weigh stations. ALK provides consistency between its PC Miler back-office routing, mileage and mapping software and in-cab CoPilot Truck routes.
