Carter Lake, Iowa-based USPS contractor 10 Roads (CCJ Top 250, No. 47) plans to close next month.
"The 10 Roads group of companies has recently made the difficult decision to commence the wind-down of all operations. Earlier [Monday, Dec. 1], the United States Postal Service (USPS) was provided 60 days’ notice from 10 Roads informing the USPS of 10 Roads intent to complete the subsequent 60 days of its contracts with the USPS with an end date of January 30, 2026," reads an email sent Monday by the company and seen by CCJ. "... you should know that 10 Roads intends to continue its operations through January 30th and to continue to provide the same dedicated and timely service to its customers through that date."
With nearly 2,500 trucks and 2,600 drivers, 10 Roads is one of USPS's largest contractors.
In a statement provided to CCJ Tuesday morning, 10 Roads said USPS over the past two years has made significant operational changes that weakened the business, including expanding its use of brokers and insourcing its transportation work.
"This has resulted in a 70% loss of revenue for 10 Roads so far, with all indications that this trend will continue," he company said. "Despite extensive efforts to adapt, 10 Roads has been unable to reduce its platform enough to make continued operations sensible, leading to the difficult decision to cease operations."
“Our industry has been navigating unprecedented challenges, and despite the dedication of our employees and leadership, the realities of the industry have become impossible to overcome,” a spokesperson for 10 Roads said. “This decision was not made lightly, and we are grateful for the years of dedicated commitment and professionalism of our entire team.”
Tough roads
10 Roads spent part of the year stuck in a labor dispute with the Teamsters union. More than 500 drivers at United States Postal Service contractor 10 Roads Express went on strike in February. Striking workers included Teamsters drivers across eight states. Drivers there kicked off a unionization campaign in 2023.
When reached by CCJ Tuesday morning, the Teamsters could not confirm they had been notified of 10 Roads' pending closure.
