Portable solar panel fights battery drain

solar_panelPurkeys has developed a portable solar panel that the company says counteracts parasitic draining from truck batteries.

The Solar Dash is a 20-watt supplemental solar charging system that plugs in to a 12-volt port and keeps vehicle batteries at a good state of charge when the truck is not in operation, the company says.

Bruce Purkey, the company’s chief creative engineer, says the panel – which is placed on the truck’s dash – converts the sun’s energy into electricty that is then used to provide power back to the tractor that is capable of both supporting the truck’s parasitic load and charging the battery. Incoming energy can be up to 18 volts, but Purkey says the system’s “brain” converts it to 14 volts.
