Meet the world’s largest truck-mounted tire handler

Farmington Freightliner- Western Star has delivered what is widely considered the largest truck-mounted tire handler ever built, and the first of its size put into service.

The 2014 Western Star 4900SB is powered by a 455 hp, 1650 pound torque DD15 engine matched to an Allison 4500RDS transmission. The truck sports 40,000 lb. front axles, 69,000 lb. rear axles and a 329-inch wheelbase.

IMG_2706The body is a Stellar TM20165 tire handler with a capacity to lift 20,000 lbs. At 21 feet, the unit will accommodate a 63-inch wheel tire with a clamping span up to 164 inches. It features a body rotation of 320 degrees and a clamping pad rotation of 360 degrees. It is completely remote operated.

Farmington Freightliner- Western Star General Manager Dale Davis compared the massive unit to a Transformer.

IMG_9683“I like what this truck can do,” he says. “It’s pretty amazing how it can reach out there and put on those tires and wheels. It’s almost like seeing a robot in action – it’s very cool. And to see it in person is pretty amazing.”

The truck primarily services large mining and oilfield equipment, which Smith says are two major industries in the area.
