Aperia Technologies has introduced its Halo automatic tire inflation system to tractor steer tires, bringing the company’s coverage of ATIS to every wheel position on the tractor and trailer. The steer axle is often considered the most safety-critical tire set on a tractor-trailer combination. Citing University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute data, Aperia said 70 percent of all crashes attributed to tire-inflation issues are because of steer tire problems.
“By having an inflator that will keep those tires properly inflated in the steer position, it's going to be a big improvement to the safety performance for most fleets,” said Ralph Dimenna, chief commercial officer for Aperia. “Loss of control can obviously lead to severe accidents, and we know that those tires on average are 8 to 12 psi underinflated in the market today. We are going to be able to solve that problem in the vast majority of cases.”
The Halo automatic tire inflation system for steer tires will be available at the end of 2026.
“The ATIS steer axle is a totally different embodiment of the current system although it uses the exact same technical principles,” said Dimenna. “Because of some of the design constraints of the steer axle, it is a thinner design, tucked in closer to the wheel and is incorporated with the hubcap that sits just behind it."
Aperia's Halo ATIS for steer tires will be available in Q4 2026.
