Five more ELDs lose certification from FMCSA

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Thursday announced it has revoked five more electronic logging devices from its Registered Devices list “due to the companies’ failure to meet the minimum requirements established in Title 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395,” the agency said.

“This action reinforces FMCSA’s commitment to ensuring that every ELD used on America’s roadways meets federal standards and supports safe, compliant operations,” said FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs. “Removing devices that fail to meet these requirements protects drivers, carriers, and the traveling public. We will continue to take decisive steps to maintain the integrity of the ELD marketplace and uphold the safety mission entrusted to us.”

The five devices revoked, effective Nov. 20, are:

A representative from Green Light ELD said the company "recently had three separate meetings with FMCSA in which all technical items were reviewed thoroughly," adding that its "IT team had already been working on the items that FMCSA requested." Because of that, Thursday's notice of the revocation "was surprising."

The company said that it's reviewing the revocation notice and is "completing the required updates before submitting our request for reinstatement to the Registered Devices list."

In the meantime, Green Light "is working to assist all customers to ensure they understand FMCSA’s guidance and what options they have," adding that the company is "committed to full compliance and transparency through this process."

Questions about what users might expect for these devices' potential future return to the registered list were sent to the the other four companies offering the ELDs but went unanswered as of press time.

Motor carriers have up to 60 days to replace the revoked ELDs with a compliant device. Anyone using the revoked ELDs, FMCSA said, must take the following steps:

  • Discontinue using the revoked ELDs and revert to paper logs or logging software to record required hours of service data.
  • Replace the revoked ELDs with a compliant ELD from the Registered Devices list before January 20, 2026.

Beginning January 20, motor carriers who continue to use the revoked devices will be considered as operating without an ELD.

If the ELD providers correct the identified deficiencies for their devices, FMCSA will place the ELDs back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry of the update.

FMCSA has recently signaled that it would take a tougher approach to vetting ELD providers with respect to adherence to standards/data manipulation capabilities. At the Guilty by Association Truck Show in September, FMCSA Senior Policy Advisor Michael Hampton emphasized the agency was well aware "there are folks out there who have these ELDs in which they are able to be manipulated, and we need to ensure that we’re going to enhance the vetting process of ELDs.”
