CargoNet recorded a 14% decrease in thefts year-over-year in the second quarter. California, Florida and Texas saw the most cargo thefts during the quarter, the firm reports.Cargo theft recording firm CargoNet received 150 cargo theft reports during the second quarter of 2019, a 14% decrease from the same period a year ago.
The average loss value per cargo theft was $152,844 for an estimated total of $22.9 million during the quarter.
The firm noted that a trend of trailer burglaries becoming the preferred method of cargo theft in the first quarter continued through the second quarter, along with a resurgence of fictitious pickup activity. Fictitious pickup thefts were reported in California, Ontario, Quebec and Florida in the second quarter, the firm says.
Food and beverage products were the most-stolen commodity in the second quarter and grew when compared to the second quarter in 2017 and 2018, CargoNet notes. More specifically, meat products, alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages were the most-stolen items.
Household items were the second-most stolen commodities but dropped compared to the second quarter in the last two years.
California saw the most cargo thefts in the quarter, but recorded thefts in the state dropped 28% year-over-year. Florida and Texas rounded out the states that saw the most thefts in the quarter.
