Heartland Express signed a definitive agreement to purchase the book of business and select trucking assets of Great Coastal Express, a regional truckload carrier based in Chester, Va. The purchase price was not disclosed.

DOT Office of Inspector General concluded that existing federal standards and state controls on testing and licensing of commercial truck and bus drivers “are not sufficient to defend against the alarming threat posed by individuals who seek to fraudulently obtain CDLs.” The OIG said suspected criminal activity dealing with CDLs has been identified in 16 states since 1998.

Motor vehicle accidents on U.S. highways cost the nation $231 billion each year, according to a study released last month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

TripPak Express’s network of drop boxes for drivers’ trip documents soon will be available in Canada. Major customers like Landstar, Prime and J.B. Hunt as well as regional carriers along the border requested the expanded coverage, says Mark Cleveland, executive vice president of TMI. Rollout of the drop boxes begins July 1.
