PeopleNet Communications (www.peoplenetonline.com) unveiled eDriver Logs, an automated system to replace paper logs for hours-of-service compliance. The system, which will be launched in beta version to key carrier partners in the third quarter, meets Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 395.15 certification requirements regarding automatic onboard recording devices, PeopleNet says. Full market launch is expected in the fourth quarter.

“Because dispatchers will have immediate access to log information, they can do a better job of route scheduling, assigning loads to specific drivers and help reduce drivers’ hours-of-service violations,” says David Ladner, PeopleNet general manager, transportation and logistics. “From the driver’s perspective, the system reduces the time they need to spend entering data into their logbook.”

Drivers will access eDriver Logs using PeopleNet’s standard in-cab message display or handheld device option. Based on Global Positioning System data, information from the PerformX engine diagnostics system and driver input, eDriver Logs calculates drivers’ specific hours of service. Although the system uses driver input to log duty status, it blocks out attempts to contradict automated data showing, for example, that the truck is moving. In addition to providing dispatchers current HOS information, the system alerts drivers nearing their daily threshold.
