Effective July 3, 2002, for-hire motor carriers operating in interstate commerce must display their USDOT numbers on both sides of all their power units. The requirement stems from a June 2000 rule published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Previously, trucks and buses in service as of July 3, 2000, could continue to operate with only the carrier’s Interstate Commerce Commission markings. Commercial motor vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet on or after July 3, 2000, however, have been required to display the carrier’s USDOT number.
