Aether Systems (www.aethersystems.com) said LTL carrier Old Dominion Freight Line has begun a rollout of Aether wireless service to its fleet of 1,700 trucks. Aether provides wireless connectivity and support to a custom-designed application that runs on a Symbol PDT 7500 handheld with an embedded Windows CE operation system. Following a trial, Old Dominion determined that the application would benefit its entire fleet.
The custom application allows Old Dominion to provide real-time information to customers and to enhance planning within the operational network, says Terry Hutchins, the carrier’s vice president of field services. Features include proof of delivery; on-demand pick-up notification; pick-up and delivery status/timing and over/short/damaged/emergency notification. It also allows for real-time outbound planning of incoming goods in Old Dominion’s cross-dock operations.
