Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking to exempt farmers certified by ODOT from federal regulations regarding parts and accessories as well as inspection, repair and maintenance of commercial motor vehicles. ODOT instead would rely on enforcing its general rules of the road and vehicle safety regulations. (Docket 13295)


Weirton Steel Corp. asked the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for an exemption from all federal safety regulations applicable to the operation of commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce. Weirton says its 44 drivers transport steel coils between the company’s mill and its warehouse, a distance of about 6 miles. The company says its safety management controls and performance record suggest that it would achieve a level of safety that is at least equivalent to that ensured by regulations. (Docket 13294)


Transportation Security Administration has invited applications for the Intercity Bus Security Grant Program, which will provide financial assistance to eligible applicants for intercity bus security enhancements and training. Justice Department published in the Dec. 26, 2002, Federal Register a final rule establishing minimum safety and security standards for private companies that transport violent prisoners on behalf of state and local jurisdictions. (AG Order No. 2640-2002)
