Research and Special Programs Administration has assumed the lead role from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for rulemaking addressing the security of hazardous material shipments. The two agencies had pursued security improvements jointly, but the Homeland Security Act of 2002 provides RSPA with enhanced authority to regulate hazardous materials transportation security.


Sixteen household goods carriers and 74 individuals have been indicted on fraud charges by the U.S. attorney for the southern district of Florida. The charges resulted from a two-year investigation by the FBI, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General and local law enforcement agencies.
