Dart issues Special Olympics challenge

Dart Transit is donating $5,000 to the 2005 World’s Largest Truck Convoy, a nationwide benefit for Special Olympics, and is challenging other trucking companies to get involved.

Elaine Briles, Dart safety director, said the company was “founded on the entrepreneurial spirit of the independent contractor” and could think of no “better ‘spirited’ group to support than Special Olympics.”

The nationwide one-day celebration is Sept. 24. More than 35 Dart drivers will participate in Texas convoys in Houston, Midland, San Antonio and Carl’s Corner, near Dallas. Company staff will work as event volunteers.

Other convoy locations nationwide include Harrisburg, Pa., where the Fraternal Order of Police is organizing a convoy in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Torch Run.

A $100 entry fee earns a truck a place in any convoy nationwide, but truckers also can bid for the honor of being lead truck. For information, call Special Olympics at 800-700-8585 or visit www.specialolympics.org and click “Support.”
