Xantrex Technology announced that its RM1012 AL Inverter/Charger is available for Volvo VN and Volvo VT 880 heavy-duty trucks. The RM1012 AL is designed to convert DC (battery) power into 120V AC (household) power in the vehicle cab to operate devices such as TVs, microwaves and computers. The device, designed for external mounting and to be fully weatherproof, eliminates the need to buy 12-volt appliances or an auxiliary combustion generator, according to Xantrex.

“With high fuel prices, new widespread anti-idling rules and U.S. incentives for anti-idling equipment, we expect strong demand for auxiliary power units from truck owners,” says John Wallace, chief executive officer of Xantrex. “Our team designed a rugged auxiliary power unit to meet the demanding requirements of Volvo’s customers. Under rigorous road testing by truck drivers, the new product has provided excellent reliability and performance. The reaction from drivers and owner/operators has been very positive.”

The 2005 U.S. energy bill acknowledged the importance of anti-idling equipment for fuel consumption and emissions reduction by permitting an increase in the gross vehicle weight of heavy-duty trucks that use onboard anti-idling technologies. The permitted increase covers the total weight of the anti-idling equipment, with a maximum of 400 pounds. The 40-pound Xantrex auxiliary power unit, along with about 35 pounds of required harnesses, brackets and cables, is well below the maximum weight exemption set by Congress., the company says.
