International Truck and Engine was awarded the 2006 Industry Innovation and Advancement of the Year Award in the medium-heavy truck original equipment market for developing a comprehensive telematics solution for buses and medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

International’s AWARE Vehicle Intelligence solution incorporates GPS technology to track vehicle position and uses in-vehicle monitors to relay key operating data such as vehicle functions and conditions back to fleet managers, owners and service teams through secure wireless networks. A geo-fence feature alerts fleet managers with an automatic e-mail or text message if a vehicle enters or leaves a predesignated region.

The system also is designed to streamline maintenance: It monitors key vehicle parameters such as fuel usage, battery voltage, engine hours and other accessory equipment to provide reports for maintenance teams to improve fleet efficiency and uptime. Fault code monitoring also helps fleet managers react to issues as they happen.

Frost and Sullivan, who presented the award to International, is a global growth consulting company that has been partnering with clients to support the development of innovative strategies for more than 40 years. The award will be officially presented at a ceremony during the 2006 Excellence in Automotive and Transportation Awards Banquet in La Jolla, Calif., on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
