James Hill, a Texas-based driver for Prime, has received the State of North Carolina Certificate of Appreciation Award for saving the life of a North Carolina State Trooper in November 2005.

After Trooper Chris Horniak stopped a vehicle on Interstate 95, the vehicle’s driver fired multiple shots at Horniak with a .45 caliber handgun. Hill, traveling in the opposite direction, witnessed the shooting and blew his air horn to distract the gunman as he pulled his rig off the road. Horniak’s attacker fled.

Hill made his way to the badly wounded officer, called for backup and provided a description of the driver and his vehicle to local police. Within minutes, an ambulance arrived for Horniak, and the gunman was arrested.

For his bravery, Hill also has been nominated as a Truckload Carriers Association Highway Angel and declared a North Carolina State Honorary Highway Patrolman.
