Ward Truckload Express is now paying drivers by practical miles rather than PC miles, resulting in a raise of about $3,000 per year.

The company also recently increased pay for drivers with four years of experience from 36 cents per mile to 37 cents per mile; drivers with five years of experience or more have been bumped to 38 cents per mile. Drivers joining Ward are required to have at least two years experience; they start at 35 cents per mile.

Ward Truckload, based in Altoona, Pa., says it is hiring more regional and over-the-road drivers and owner-operators to accommodate its steady growth.
