STB seeks comments on mover liability

The Surface Transportation Board is inviting comments until June 22 on whether current federal regulations regarding the level of liability protection provided by motor carriers that provide transportation of household goods provide adequate protection for shippers.

In a May 23 Federal Register notice, STB also requested comment on the benefits of purchase by a shipper of insurance to supplement the carrier’s limitations on liability and on whether there are abuses of the current regulations that leave the shipper unprotected in the event of loss and damage to a shipment of household goods.

In last year’s major transportation act, Congress directed STB to review regulations governing HHG liability and to revise the regulations if necessary.
