FMCSA to explore thermal imaging

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration plans to spend about $1.4 million to explore using thermal imaging and other technologies to identify, in real time, faults and failures in tires, brakes and bearings mounted on commercial motor vehicles.

The goal of the initiative — which was part of last year’s highway bill — is to develop and deploy a thermal imaging inspection system along an interstate and to establish the probability of component failure.
