Kohler Power Systems, a supplier of mobile generator technology, has selected Dometic Environmental Corp. as the supplier of air conditioning components for its new auxiliary power unit. Kohler recently introduced an integrated package consisting of a 5 kW siderail-mounted air-cooled diesel genset and a Dometic-supplied 115 V air conditioning and heating system.

Kohler’s 5 kW APU, with its air-cooled, self-contained diesel engine, is designed to minimize intrusion into the truck’s existing systems. The compact, lightweight unit measures 27-by-26-by-23 inches and weighs less than 350 pounds. The unit’s direct-drive alternator design provides for higher reliability and lower maintenance, and the oil-service interval is 500 hours. The system includes Kohler’s Advanced Digital Controller, which is designed to allow the driver to start and stop the generator and adjust the heating and cooling from inside the cab. The digital controller also features an LED screen that displays up to 13 operational conditions.

“We kept the truck owner’s needs in mind when designing this new APU,” says Chris Baldwin, mobile generator business director for Kohler, Wis.-based Kohler. “We are offering a space-saving, fuel-efficient product that keeps installation and maintenance costs to a minimum.”

Dometic’s auxiliary HVAC system, offered in 10,000 or 14,000 BTU capacities, consists of an external condensing unit and a compressor/evaporator/blower unit that mounts inside the sleeper. The two units are connected by flexible refrigerant lines that are precharged at the factory for hookup without special tools. The systems come with a 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5 kW built-in electrical heating unit.

“We are very excited to team with Kohler Power Systems, a company that is widely known and respected in the power generation industry,” says Lou Siegel, senior vice president of marketing and strategic business development for Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Dometic Environmental. “Kohler’s industry-leading diesel generator technology is backed by a service network of more than 500 distributors and dealers nationwide.”
