International Truck recently announced that it is estimating the cost of its CityStar Series — formerly known as the CF Series — to be $4,000 to 4,500 higher due to the 2007 emissions requirements. The cab forward truck is powered by a MaxxForce 5 diesel engine, which requires new technology to meet EPA mandates.
For its family of midrange engines, MaxxForce engines will be optimizing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and using proven air management and fuel injection systems, as well as a diesel particulate filter. These upgrades have added to the estimated cost of the CityStar Series.
“The cost of upgrading the engines to meet the federal mandates will have an effect on virtually all diesel truck customers nationwide,” says O.J. Aboyade, vice president and general manager for CF business at Warrenville, Ill.-based International. “However, our goal continues to be providing customers with the highest reliability, serviceability and performance.”
In November 2005, International released preliminary information on both pricing and fuel economy, noting it was working on minimizing the impact of both on its customers. It was announced that prices for MaxxForce midrange diesel-powered trucks and IC buses were estimated to increase $5,000 to $6,000 per vehicle. For International Class 8 truck/tractors with supplier engines, the estimates range from $7,000 to $10,000.
The CityStar Series chassis complements a wide range of body types and equipment for use in such vocations as pickup and delivery, refrigeration, recovery, landscaping and construction. CityStar Series models also offer an automatic transmission with an optional power take-off (PTO) capable of operating specialized body equipment.
