Safeway, one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, has announced that it will begin accepting the Wright Express card for fuel purchases at the pump.

Safeway has a network of more than 290 fuel sites across the United States, including Vons in Southern California, Randalls and Tom Thumb in Texas, Carrs in Alaska and Dominick’s in Illinois; the company operates 1,755 stores in the United States and western Canada and had annual sales of $40.2 billion in 2006. Wright Express provides payment processing and information management services to the U.S. commercial and government vehicle fleet industry.

“We are excited to team with Wright Express to make the convenience of our fueling sites available to their fleets throughout our region,” says Joe Pettus, senior vice president of fuel and energy at Safeway.

“Wright Express is pleased to offer our customers the option of fueling at Safeway sites,” says Michael Dubyak, president and chief executive officer of South Portland, Maine-based Wright Express. “Safeway is one of the largest and most popular fuel retailers in the Pacific Northwest and is a great addition to our network.”
