Large retailer Safeway Inc. announced plans today, Jan. 18, to convert its entire domestic trucking fleet of more than 1,000 trucks to cleaner-burning biodiesel fuel.

Steve Burd, Safeway’s chief executive officer, and California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi formally declared the conversion during a press conference today at Safeway’s green store in Dublin, Calif., which operates on solar and wind energy.

The Pleasanton, Calif.-based company had one of its newly modified biodiesel-powered tractor-trailers on site.
