News from Work Truck Show: Coke buys 120 Eaton hybrids and more

Eaton Corp. announced at the Work Truck Show on Wednesday, Feb. 27, that Coca-Cola Enterprises will purchase 120 new trucks in 2008 powered by Eaton’s hybrid-electric drivetrain system. The order is Eaton’s largest to date in North America for hybrid systems. Coca-Cola bought 20 trucks with Eaton’s hybrid system in 2007.

“We have been working with Coca-Cola Enterprises since 2003 to assess our systems,” says Dimitri Kazarinoff, general manager for emerging technologies at Eaton’s Truck Group. “Coca-Cola is demonstrating its commitment to reducing pollution and greenhouse gases, and Eaton is pleased to be a part of this effort.”

Coca-Cola’s testing and evaluation of its existing trucks equipped with Eaton’s hybrid-electric drivetrains resulted in a 32 percent reduction in emissions and a 37 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to conventionally powered equipment.

Eaton’s system relies on a parallel-type diesel-electric hybrid architecture in conjunction with Eaton’s Fuller UltraShift automated transmission. It incorporates an electric motor/generator between the output of an automated clutch and input of the transmission. The system recovers energy normally lost during braking and stores the energy in batteries.

Also at The Work Truck Show, held this week in Atlanta:

  • Dodge announced numerous enhancements to its commercial truck lineup, which includes the Dodge Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs, the Dodge Sprinter full-size van and the Dodge Grand Caravan cargo van;
  • General Motors’ Fleet and Commercial Operations announced the 2009 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana 4500 commercial cutaway van, designed for use as school and shuttle buses, ambulances and some high-cube van body applications;
  • International Truck and Engine Corp. announced that the 2008 International DuraStar with new MaxxForce engines provide as much as 9 to 13 percent fuel savings over previous models;
  • Hiab, the business unit providing load handling solutions within Cargotec, signed an agreement to acquire U.K.-based DEL Equipment Ltd. and U.S.-based Ultron Lift Corp.;
  • Dueco announced that its Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), designed in conjunction with Odyne Corp., now is available as an option on the Terex Hi-Ranger TL50M, a hi-ranger telescopic material-handling aerial device; and
  • British firm Modec Ltd.’s namesake all-electric Modec truck made its East Coast debut.
