Illinois revises out-of-state CDL road test policy

Effective May 1, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office is implementing a new policy for out-of-state commercial driver’s license holders when they transfer that license to the State of Illinois.

When a driver surrenders an out-of-state CDL to an Illinois driver’s license facility, that applicant now must take both the written and the road exam before an Illinois CDL will be issued. Under this policy, all Illinois drivers holding a CDL will have demonstrated driving skills and knowledge.

Any questions or clarifications about this policy may be addressed to CDL Administrator Terry Montalbano at 217-785-1350.
