Syware upgrades toolkit for mobile databases

Syware Inc., a developer of mobile database development tools for business and personal productivity, announced the release of Visual CE 11, a mobile database development tool. The new release extends the capabilities of Visual CE and its drag-and-drop desktop development environment, which enables both business professionals and developers to create Windows Mobile-based applications more easily with little or no programming, the company says.

Visual CE now can read and generate XML, allowing Visual CE to easily exchange data with other databases, document managers, desktop publishers and programmers, according to the company; XML capablities adds a new dimension to Visual CE’s enterprise connectivity, allowing data to be transferred to and from handhelds quickly, accurately and efficiently to a large variety of XML-enabled third-party applications and databases.

In addition to being able to send SMS messages (text messages), Visual CE forms now can be launched by an incoming SMS message, Syware says; this “push” technology allows managers, administrators and other users to not only notify the Visual CE user of important events immediately, but also to initiate timely actions in response to them.

Additional capabilities of Visual CE 11, according to the company, include:

  • Playing WAV files;
  • Fast, efficient publishing synchronization operator;
  • Software installation from storage cards;
  • Text file I/O;
  • Locking down the handheld by hiding the “Start” button;
  • Phone dialing;
  • New events, screen rotation and moving onto a record;
  • Password editing masks; and
  • Textual application listings.
