Colorado ponders weight exemption for APUs

A newly proposed rule by the Colorado Department of Revenue would provide trucks with an auxiliary power unit a weight exemption of up to 400 pounds. The APU weight exemption has been allowed under federal law for more than a year, but the federal law did not mandate that states accept the weight exemption; states must change either their legislation or state rules to allow for this exemption.

The exemption was sought by the American Trucking Associations and others because of the fuel savings and environmental benefits associated with APUs. The Colorado Motor Carriers Association has expressed its appreciation to the state and CDOR for their efforts to amend the rule to allow for the weight exemption.
