Trailer size, weight limit bill reintroduced

Congress once again is considering legislation to freeze trailer length and weights. On March 19, U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., introduced the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act.

That bill, HR 1618, would limit trailer length on the Interstate Highway System and extend those limits to other roads. It also would prevent states from enacting new laws to allow trailers longer than 53 feet; tractor-trailer weights would remain frozen at the current level.

House members referred the bill, which has 48 co-sponsors, to its transportation and infrastructure committee. The legislation has been introduced by congressional members several times in recent years.
