Schneider National announced that it was named Dollar Tree’s 2008 Inbound Carrier of the Year. Dollar Tree, an operator of single-price-point dollar stores, selected Schneider over 11 other carriers and recognized the transportation provider at its headquarters in Green Bay, Wis. Schneider also recently was named the CaseStack Green Carrier of the Year for its outstanding level of service while remaining the most “green” within Casestack’s frequently used carrier base.

Dollar Tree used six criteria when selecting its Inbound Carrier of the Year: load acceptance, on-time pickup, amount of volume carried, safety rating, billing accuracy and customer service. Dollar Tree says it noted the first-rate customer service and high load-acceptance rates in its selection of Schneider National.

“Dollar Tree strives to deliver exceptional service to our stores and a cost-efficient supply chain for our vendors,” says Dean Jones, Dollar Tree’s vice president of transportation. “In order to achieve that, we need outstanding carriers to ensure products arrive to the distribution centers on time. Schneider’s forethought in planning for 2008, and the actual execution of that plan, allowed the company to successfully move freight from our vendors to our nine distribution centers across the United States.”

This is Dollar Tree’s fifth year naming an Inbound Carrier of the Year and the first year Schneider earned the award. The award recognizes Schneider for the van/truckload and intermodal services it provides to the retailer.

“Efficiently and cost-effectively moving freight to distribution centers is critical to the supply chain,” says Dan Van Alstine, senior vice president and general manager of van/truckload services at Schneider National. “We collaborated with Dollar Tree to fully understand its transportation needs and created capabilities to meet those needs, provide reliable capacity and deliver the kind of cost savings needed to be successful in this challenging economic environment. We’re proud that our multimodal approach delivers this kind of value. To be named Dollar Tree’s Inbound Carrier of the Year is a true highlight of our seven-year relationship.”

CaseStack is a sustainability-focused supply chain provider of logistics outsourcing services to companies selling products to retailers, distributors and other manufacturers. The company recognized Schneider for consistently following best practices within the area of sustainability.

“This award is a direct result of Schneider’s superior reputation for reliability, quality and customer service,” says Dan Sanker, president and chief executive officer of CaseStack. “We look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with them in 2009.”

In order to be eligible for consideration, carriers need to be members of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership. CaseStack’s management team evaluated and rated the 20 eligible providers based on criteria such as driving and idling practices, tire modifications, body modifications and management of maximum truck speeds. In addition, service levels, pricing, availability and quality also were taken into account.

“Schneider National has a longstanding commitment to operating the most energy-efficient fleet in the industry,” Van Alstine says. “By being more fuel-efficient, we’re lowering emissions and saving valuable natural resources. We’re also helping our customers meet their own sustainability goals. We’re proud to work with companies who share our commitment to social responsibility and are honored to receive this inaugural award from CaseStack.”
