U.S. diesel price above $4 for first time in 3 months

The national average retail diesel price climbed for the seventh consecutive week, surpassing the $4 mark for the first time since May 14. The price climbed 6.1 cents to $4.026 a gallon during the week ended Monday, Aug. 20, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.

During 12 straight weekly declines from April 16 through July 2, the price of diesel had dropped 49.9 cents a gallon; since that time, the price has climbed 37.8 cents. This week’s price is 21.6 cents above the same week last year.

Average retail prices rose in all regions, led by an 10.6-cent increase to $4.184 on the West Coast, not including California. The most expensive diesel on average was $4.313 a gallon in California, where prices rose 9.8 cents. The least expensive diesel on average was $3.911 a gallon on the Gulf Coast, where prices climbed 5.5 cents.
