Light- and medium-duty Class 1-6
Truck makers revamp lineups, debut new models in response to growing market
Both the light- and medium-duty truck markets are seeing some noteworthy changes for 2013, including new models, redesigns, updated engines, revamped platforms and alternative fuel versions. Here are some highlights:
Chevrolet/GMC: General Motors will offer a factory-built bifuel system for both its Chevrolet and GMC extended-cab heavy-duty pickup trucks, allowing the trucks to run on both gasoline and compressed natural gas. The Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD bifuel trucks come with a Vortec 6.0L V8 engine that transitions seamlessly between the two fuels, with a single lightweight tank in the bed.
Chrysler: A factory-built bifuel configuration for the Ram 2500 HD crew cab runs on both CNG and gasoline and is powered by the 5.7L Hemi V8 engine matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission and equipped with two CNG tanks in the pickup bed.
Ford: The E-Series van line is being phased out and replaced with a new Transit van platform that will be introduced with a diesel engine option. The E-Series will continue to be built after the Transit begins arriving in dealer lots in late 2013 after validation testing.
Canada’s Westport Innovations is providing a bifuel CNG/gasoline option for F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models.
Freightliner: The SmartPlex electrical system for Business Class M2 models is designed to provide flexibility for truck equipment manufacturers when configuring a truck to a specific body installation. The system uses Freightliner’s proprietary control modules that connect to the J1939 data bus, controlling power to lights and TEM equipment. SmartPlex also includes a flex switch and lamp module that provides capacity for up to 24 switches in the overhead compartment.
Hino: The Class 5 cabover engine Model 195 is available with either a diesel or diesel-electric hybrid powertrain. The 19,500-lb. GVW 195 and 195h both are powered by a 5L J05E Series diesel engine generating 210 hp and 440 lb.-ft. of torque and equipped with a selective catalytic reduction emissions control system. The engine is mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission.
Isuzu: The 12,000-lb. GVWR N-Series low-cab-forward NPR gasoline model will be available with a three-person standard cab or seven-passenger crew cab. It will be powered by a 6.0L Vortex V8 gasoline engine delivering 297 hp and 372 lb.-ft. of torque inked to a 6L90 Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission with double overdrive.
Kenworth: The K270 Class 6 cabover targets urban-delivery applications such as pickup and delivery, lease/rental, towing/recovery, landscaping, furniture delivery and food processing and distribution that require a maneuverable truck capable of carrying 18- to 26-foot van bodies, stakebeds or roll-on/roll-off beds. A 63.4-inch BBC provides a 55-degree wheel cut for added maneuverability.
The 26,000 lb.-GVWR K270 cabover is offered in a 4×2 Class 6 truck configuration built on a chassis similar to the T270 conventional and is available with Allison 2100 HS and RDS 5-speed transmissions. The truck has a wide cab that can accommodate up to three people with a driver air-suspended seat.
Mitsubishi Fuso: The Canter low-cab-forward lineup can be ordered in solid black to help keep some customers from having to paint the cabs to match their company colors. Mirrors have wider mounting arms that facilitate the installation of bodies with outside widths up to 102 inches on all Canter FE models. For cold climate operation, the Canter can be outfitted with an oil pan heater to make engine start-up easier; it replaces the block heaters available on earlier models.
Navistar: International’s widening range of medium-duty alternative-fuel vehicles includes the DuraStar Hybrid and a DuraStar model powered by either a CNG or LNG powertrain. The kits developed by Emissions Solutions Inc. allow DuraStar natural gas conversions with 175-300 hp and 460-860 lb.-ft. of torque.
Nissan: The NV200 compact cargo van, which joins the company’s NV cargo full-sized van and its full-sized NV passenger van, has a cargo capacity of 123 cubic feet and a 1,500-pound maximum payload and measures 186.2 inches long on a 115.2-inch wheelbase. The van is powered by a 2.0L 16-valve dual overhead cam 4-cylinder engine matched with an Xtronic CVT transmission.
Peterbilt: The medium-duty Model 210 and Model 220 cabovers – which serve applications such as pickup and delivery, wrecker and sweeper – pair a lightweight chassis and frame rail with a strategically positioned electrical system to optimize body installation and increase payload capacity. The trucks are available with an Allison 2100 Series automatic transmission.
The Model 210 is available as a Class 6 straight truck with a 26,000-lb. GVWR and features a tight turning radius for added manueverability. Standard with an automatic transmission and air suspension, the Model 210 is recommended for bodies between 18 to 26 feet in length and can be configured for non-CDL operation. The Model 220, available as either a Class 6 or 7 truck, provides a low chassis weight for high-volume payloads and is recommended for bodies between 20 and 28 feet in length.
