ProstarNavistar and Cummins say they have reached a “definitive, long-term supply agreement” regarding the use of Cummins’ selective catalytic reduction aftertreatment on Navistar’s proprietary heavy-duty MaxxForce engines.

As reported in August, the two engine manufacturers announced they had struck an agreement in which Navistar would use Cummins’ technology and parts in its quest to move from an exhaust gas recirculation-only approach to an SCR, aftreatment-based system. Also as reported last month, Navistar has discontinued its 15-liter MaxxForce engine in favor of using Cummins ISX15 engines in its ProStar, PayStar and 9900 model International trucks.

Navistar said in the announcement on Oct. 22 that engineering teams from both companies have been collaborating for several months to “integrate vehicle, engine and emissions aftertreatment systems.”

The International ProStar will be available with the ISX15 starting in December, Navistar says, and the truck will be available with MaxxForce 13-liter engines with Cummins SCR system starting in April 2013.

The rest of the International truck line will transition to SCR-based equipment in phases in 2013, based on customer demand, Navistar says.
