In gaining some lost ground from August, orders for manufactured durable goods jumped 9.9 percent in September from August, say figures from the Census Bureau. A surge in civilian aircraft orders and their parts accounts for the increase, and a drop in August accounted for a 13 percent decline in orders that month.

Orders for transportation equipment were up 31.7 percent month over month, while the increase in aircraft orders rose 2,640 percent — a figure that represents growth to $535 million in orders in September from $14.7 million in August.
