Fact: There are currently three engine choices on the market for Class 8 LNG applications – 8.9- and 11.9-liter spark-ignited engines and a 15-liter high pressure direct injection (HPDI) engine that burns a 5 percent diesel and 95 percent LNG blend. The 11.9-liter option, the Cummins ISX12 G became available earlier this year, filling the void in engine sizes. With the introduction, interest in natural gas trucks likely will increase as fleets accustomed to 13-liter diesel engines now have a natural gas engine choice closer to their preferred displacement size.
