The number of weeks a Final Rule to mandate the use of electronic logging devices has been delayed, according to the Department of Transportation’s latest report. It also has pushed back dates for rulemakings on speed limiters, Safety Fitness Determination and others.

The rough median driver age, according to research presented last week by the American Transportation Institute, which concluded from recent study that more than half of truck drivers are over age 45 — much higher than that of comparable industries. ATRI says that could be a major problem for the trucking industry in the next 10 years as the “greatest generation” of truck operators begins to retire.

The number of “pilferage” cargo theft events that have occurred at truck stops and pull-offs along major Interstate routes in Arkansas, according to FreightWatch International, who issued a warning to carriers and drivers along the affected routes.

The projected difference between 2014’s diesel average and 2015’s, according to the latest Short Term Energy Outlook from the Department of Energy. 2015’s diesel average is projected to be $2.83, while 2014’s was $3.83.

The current age truck operators can obtain a CDL — which the American Trucking Associations said this week could be lowered for some qualified candidates to help fleets attract new drivers to the industry. ATA’s Dave Osiecki laid out his group’s 2015 agenda this week, which includes pushing for a long-term fix to hours-of-service contention, increasing fuel taxes and more.
