Los Angeles County is the top county in the United States for reported cargo theft incidents, according to a report from cargo theft recording firm CargoNet and third-party logistics provider AFN Logistics.
Between July 1, 2013, and July 1, 2016, there were 329 cargo thefts reported in Los Angeles County, the report states. California and Texas had the most counties in the top 10 with three each. The full top 10 list of counties with the most cargo thefts is as follows:
- Los Angeles County, Calif. – 329 thefts
- Dallas County, Texas – 239
- San Bernardino County, Calif. – 191
- Cook County (Chicago), Ill. – 150
- Miami-Dade County, Fla. – 114
- Harris County (Houston), Texas – 107
- Tarrant County (Arlington/Fort Worth), Texas – 78
- Middlesex County (Edison), N.J. – 68
- Will County (Bolingbrook), Ill. – 57
- Riverside County, Calif. – 56
Thefts were most common in warehouses and distribution centers, with 329 thefts in these locations during the three-year period. Other locations, including truck stops, side of the road, carrier or terminal lots, drop lots and ports of entry, were second-most targeted locations with 295 thefts during the period.
CargoNet General Manager Anthony Canale says cargo theft incidents increased in 2015 over 2014 from 844 reported cargo thefts to 881, accounting for more than $175 million in goods stolen.
