Former acting FMCSA boss joining LTL trade group

Former Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Acting Administrator Jim Mullen has been named Chief Strategy Officer for the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). 

Mullen, in his new role with NMFTA, will be responsible for partnering with vehicle manufacturers, telematics companies, federal agencies and supply chain leaders for the development of digital standards and trucking cybersecurity research, as well as best practices to protect infrastructure.

With my regulatory expertise, I firmly believe we can establish the necessary standards to propel the industry forward." 

Mullen was FMCSA Chief Counsel from 2018 to 2020 and served as interim administrator from October 2019 to August 2020. In October 2020 he joined self-driving technology company TuSimple as its Chief Legal and Risk Officer. Mullen left TuSimple in September 2022 amid an investor lawsuit and this year TuSimple began winding down its U.S. operation

Mullen's most recent role is Executive Director of the Clean Freight Coalition.
