Used commercial vehicle inventories fell again in June 2026, led by sharp year-over-year drops in sleeper trucks and medium-duty units despite steadying retail asking values.

  • Heavy-Duty Supply Plummets: Used heavy-duty truck inventory fell 6.81% month-over-month and 31.61% year-over-year in June 2026, marking seven straight months of declines led by sleeper cabs.
  • Semi-Trailer Inventory Drops: The used semi-trailer market logged its 11th consecutive monthly supply decrease, falling 4.03% from May and 29.28% from June 2025.
  • Medium-Duty Slide Continues: Used medium-duty truck inventory dropped for the 10th consecutive month, falling 3.69% month-over-month and 37.55% year-over-year.
  • Values Trend Sideways to Down: Despite shrinking supply across all sectors, retail asking prices remained flat or declined, while auction values showed mixed results with modest gains in heavy-duty and trailer segments.

Inventory levels for used commercial trucks and semi-trailers continued their month-over-month and year-over-year declines in June 2026, according to market reports released by Sandhills Global and J.D. Power's July 2026 Market Update.

The ongoing drop in inventory spans several key sectors, including heavy-duty trucks, medium-duty trucks, and semi-trailers, marking multi-month downward trends across the board. Despite shrinking supply, retail asking values have largely trended downward or sideways, while auction values showed mixed results.

"Freight continues to be strong and fuel prices are letting up, leaving dealers hopeful that prices will go down," said Scott Lubischer, sales manager for Truck Paper. "Aggressively priced units are currently moving, and more dealers are looking to buy."

According to ACT Research, June same dealer used Class 8 retail truck sales bounced back from May’s weakness by 9.6%, extending their long-term gain by 4% year-over-year.

Auction and wholesale markets were both softer in June, noted ACT Research Vice President Steve Tam. Auction volumes slumped 22% month-over-month, "unusual for the last month of the quarter," he said. Wholesale dealer activity trickled 4.8% lower month-over-month. "Combined, June’s total market same dealer sales volumes were down 5.1% month-over-month," Tam added.

The first half of 2026 ended on a positive note with regard to Class 8 pricing and sales volume. Manufacturers are increasing production and new truck deliveries are set to increase, with a corresponding uptick in trades, according to J.D. Power.

According to data from Price Digests, a company owned by CCJ parent company Fusable, the average sales price for a late model tractor was just under $90,000. Better value could be found in 5 year old models, which had an average price of $50,000 and 10 year old models could be had at a roughly 50% discount.

Inventory decreased 6.81% from May 2026 and plummeted 31.61% compared to June 2025, according to Sandhills Global. This marks seven consecutive months of declining inventory for the sector. Used sleeper trucks experienced the sharpest drops, with inventory falling 10.16% month-over-month and 33.62% year-over-year.

Asking values for heavy-duty trucks dipped 1.05% from May 2026 and 1.3% compared to June 2025, continuing a downward trend. Sleeper trucks led the month-over-month retail decline with a 1.78% drop, while day cabs saw the largest year-over-year asking value decrease at 2.39%.

Used semi-trailers

The used semi-trailer market logged its 11th consecutive month of inventory declines in June 2026, dropping 4.03% from May 2026 and 29.28% compared to June 2025. Used drop-deck trailers saw the biggest monthly inventory drop at 8.46%, while dry van trailers led the annual decline, falling 31.72%, Sandhills noted.

Asking values for semi-trailers remained relatively flat, ticking up a marginal 0.09% from May 2026 and rising 3.08% year-over-year compared to June 2025. Used refrigerated trailers (reefers) saw the largest annual asking value increase at 4.57%.

Auction values for semi-trailers are also trending sideways, decreasing 2.24% from May 2026 but increasing 4.81% compared to June 2025. Used reefers saw the most volatility in auction pricing, dropping 7.55% from May 2026 but jumping 9.64% compared to the same period in 2025.

Used medium-duty trucks

U.S. used medium-duty truck inventories fell 3.69% from May 2026 and 37.55% compared to June 2025, marking 10 straight months of declines leading up to June 2026.
