Volvo debuts 400-mile, long-haul electric truck for Europe

Volvo Trucks on Tuesday launch of a new long-distance electric heavy-duty truck for Europe capable of traveling 435 miles (700 kilometers) on a single charge.

Stateside, Volvo's VNR Electric—the company's sole electric model for the U.S. market—features a 275-mile range.

The new model, the Volvo FH Aero Electric with extended range, utilizes an e-axle driveline that creates space for increased battery capacity. The truck is designed to support the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard, allowing its eight batteries to charge from 20% to 80% in just under an hour. 

Volvo's VNR Electric uses a traditional drivetrain layout with a centrally mounted motor. The fully-integrated driveline features Volvo’s two-speed I-Shift automated transmission for acceleration.

Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm called the new long-call electric “the best in the industry,” adding it offers an "outstanding range in combination with high payload, fast charging, and great riding comfort.”

A 50-minute charging window is significant for the European market, as it aligns with legislated rest periods for truck drivers in the European Union, potentially matching the productivity levels of traditional diesel-powered fleets.

In addition to the long-haul model, Volvo unveiled the next generation of its FH, FM, and FMX Electric trucks. These models feature a range of up to 470 kilometers (292 miles) and an updated driveline designed for vocational versatility. The new integrated gearbox power take-off (PTO) allows drivers to power auxiliary equipment, such as concrete mixers or refuse units, directly from the main system without needing additional motors.

Key technical updates across the new lineup include:

  • Optimized transmission: New eight-speed and six-speed powershift gearboxes paired with dual motors for smoother shifting and reduced cabin noise.
  • Rapid charging: Standard heavy-duty models can charge from 20% to 80% in roughly 65 minutes.
  • Operational flexibility: Enhanced drivelines designed to handle a wider variety of transport assignments previously reserved for internal combustion engines.

“We are broadening [our offering] and making electric solutions possible for an even wider range of transport assignments,” Alm said. “It has never been easier to replace diesel trucks with electric ones.”

Volvo Trucks plans to roll the trucks out to international markets in phases beginning this year.
