OPAL Fuels announced Wednesday it has started work on a landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at the Kirby Canyon Landfill in Santa Clara County, California.

The facility, wholly owned by OPAL, will have an initial annual design capacity of 0.66 million MMBtus made by capturing biogas produced naturally at the landfill and converting it to RNG. At capacity, the plant will be able to produce 5.1 million gas gallons equivalent of RNG every year.
OPAL will then distribute the RNG to heavy-duty trucks that run on natural gas. This is the company's 17th RNG project and its first in California.
