A fleet of eight renewable natural gas-powered trucks is helping Graphic Packaging International tackle its supply chain emissions while maintaining the reliability of daily runs between Chicago and Kalamazoo.
Paper Transport is working with Graphic Packaging International, a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, to gather real-world data on how alternative fuels perform in day-to-day freight operations.
Fueled by renewable natural gas (RNG) from Clean Energy’s fueling station in Romeoville, Michigan, the initiative leans on Cummins' X15N natural gas engines to transport paperboard and recovered fiber for Graphic Packaging to "help inform our efforts to address Scope 3 emissions across our value chain," said Domingo Amunategui, vice president of logistics at Graphic Packaging.
According to Clean Energy, RNG can yield up to 90% lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel and can achieve negative carbon intensity when sourced from agricultural waste-recovery systems. It also provides greater price stability than traditional diesel.
"Paired with Cummins' X15N, the fleet will have performance and range like a diesel fleet, but operate 40% cleaner, and do all this on a fuel that costs less than diesel," said Tom Driscoll, senior vice president at Clean Energy.
PTI has operated natural gas fleets since 2010 and has accumulated more than 87 million natural gas miles serving dedicated shippers across packaging, consumer packaged goods, and manufacturing sectors.
